Today’s run was pretty great. Just under two weeks ago when I first ran the causeway route I ran it in 54 minutes and some seconds, it’s about 3.4 miles round trip, and since I was new to outdoor running, I felt awesome about doing it in under an hour.
So if I felt awesome then, I feel really awesome now, because without even trying I just ran it in 43 minutes! I put together a playlist I called “Peaceful Run” - mostly just music I like listening to, not so much stuff I thought I’d like running to. My plan was to take some time to just walk around and look at butterflies and pretty flowers and listen to music that makes me happy.
Then I started running, and made it past the halfway point of my run before I needed to walk a little. I took long deep breaths of warm wind coming off the river, and then ran a little, walked a little the rest of the way home.
My run the other day was a real turning point, I’ve felt so much lighter ever since. Running continues to push and inspire me!

This is going to sound a little weird. I don’t have an armband for my iphone, so I wear two sports bras and put my phone in between them like a little pocket. It works well enough. Anyway, I’ve noticed that makes a weird flat panel on my chest, and it kind of makes me feel like a robot. Ok, I’m just going to be honest here, I absolutely pretend I’m a robot because of this.
That’s not really the weird part though… So today when I was running, Extraordinary Machine came onto my playlist, and I thought to myself: ”Fiona Apple is my spirit animal.” While I now believe that to be absolutely true, that still is not the weird part.
I’m pretty sure I just had a life-changing run. I was being completely silly, I basically stopped paying attention to the rest of my day, and really enjoyed my run. The sun was soft, the wind was warm, the shade was perfect, and when this song came on I just started smiling. I practically started laughing. Then I just listened and I moved my legs. I really, really felt my legs pushing away from the ground, and pushing my body forward.
Something in me changed on that run. I let go of something, and I’m not entirely sure what it was, but it felt amazing.
If there was a better way to go then it would find me
I can’t help it, the road just rolls out behind me
Be kind to me, or treat me mean
I’ll make the most of it, I’m an extraordinary machine
Crossing this bridge is part of my favorite new running route. It works better when the bridge is down though!
